Pacific Hybreed, the U.S.'s first commercial shellfish breeding company, has raised $1.0M in Seed funding. The investment comes as the company works to develop resilient and high-yield varieties of commercially important shellfish, addressing critical challenges in sustainable aquaculture.
Founded by Dennis Hedgecock and Joth Davis, Pacific Hybreed applies decades of university-based research to combat threats like climate change, ocean acidification, and diseases such as Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome. Its technology uses quantitative genomics and crossbreeding to enhance shellfish production through hybrid vigor, a non-GMO approach that also ensures products won't interbreed with wild stocks.
