In a significant boost to rural economic development, the USAID Agriculture Growing Rural Opportunities Activity (AGRO) has successfully raised $1 billion to further its mission in Ukraine. Financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by Chemonics International, AGRO is dedicated to revitalizing Ukraine's agricultural sector, particularly in the wake of the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by Russia's invasion. The funding aims to support small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises (MSMEs) across the most vulnerable rural communities, enhancing their productivity and market integration both locally and globally. Targeting key value chains such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, and grains, AGRO is implementing a series of strategic projects designed to restore economic activity, rebuild supply chains, and bolster food security. Currently, AGRO reaches over 6,000 farmers—approximately 12% of the registered agricultural enterprises in Ukraine—enabling them to enhance their operations with improved access to grain drying, storage, processing facilities, and financing. By empowering these agricultural producers, AGRO plays a crucial role in the Agriculture Resilience Initiative (AGRI)-Ukraine, which seeks to strengthen agricultural production and drive exports in a time of global food supply crises. This funding not only addresses immediate food security concerns but also lays the groundwork for sustained economic recovery and resilience for the future.
