The $5.3M seed round Hypercubic just closed is a bet that the future of finance, government, and energy still runs through COBOL. The startup, backed by Y Combinator, CIV, and Afore Capital, among others, is building AI-native tools to modernize the mainframe systems that anchor the global economy.
Hypercubic’s pitch is that these decades-old platforms aren’t just legacy baggage-they’re critical infrastructure that most AI companies have ignored. The company says it’s developing a new class of intelligence that can understand and rebuild these systems, rather than simply patching them. The round also drew participation from Pioneer Fund, Multimodal Investors, and notable angels like Kaz Nejatian and Venky Harinarayan.
