Phosphoenix, a Dutch startup developing a brain prosthesis to restore vision, has raised $1.5M in pre-seed funding. The round drew support from ROM InWest, TTT Medtech Fund, First Fund, and Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland.
The company's prosthesis uses electrodes implanted via a proprietary probe to stimulate nerve cells in the brain's visual processing regions. Stimulating a single electrode produces the perception of a dot of light; multiple electrodes can generate recognizable patterns. In its final form, the system pairs with camera-equipped glasses that convert the outside world into electrical stimulation the brain can interpret.
