Avivo Biomedical Inc., a company developing enzymes to eliminate the blood type barrier in transfusions and organ transplants, has secured $7.7M in funding. The capital, provided by the Government of Canada's Life Sciences Fund, will fuel its mission to increase organ transplants and expand the available blood supply by converting all blood types to universal donor Type O.
The company recently completed a world-first proof-of-concept study, successfully implanting an Enzyme Converted Type O (ECO) organ into a blood type mismatched human decedent kidney transplant model. Avivo is now advancing its dual-use technology, applicable to military trauma and donor organ utilization, toward first in human clinical trials.
