Weavers’ Company Weaves History Into the Future with a £5,000 Grant for Young Talent in Textiles

We are thrilled to announce that The Weavers’ Company has successfully raised £5,000 in a recent funding round that will fuel its continuing mission of supporting the community and nurturing the future of the textile industry.

With roots that stretch back to the early 12th century—as evidenced by the first mention in the Pipe Roll of 1130 and the awarding of its first Royal Charter by King Henry II, famously attested by Thomas Becket—the Company has a rich legacy intertwined with the City of London and the evolution of silk weaving and the broader textile trade.

Today, this historic institution remains a cornerstone of progress, not only by upholding traditions, but also by fostering innovation and empowering young people.

The funds raised will be directed towards expanding its impactful initiatives, notably in education, training, and community outreach.

The Weavers’ Company continues to make a tangible difference by supporting three inner City London primary schools through financial contributions and governance, and by playing a pivotal role in the annual “Making it in Textiles” Conference in collaboration with other Livery Companies, aimed at inspiring final year students to consider a career in textiles.

Additionally, a significant focus of its charitable efforts is assisting young offenders by promoting rehabilitation projects and steering youth towards productive and crime-free lives.

The funding will also help safeguard the well-being of London’s elderly and vulnerable residents through the upkeep and development of Weavers’ House, an almshouse in Wanstead that provides sheltered accommodation.

This latest funding announcement not only underscores the Company’s enduring commitment to tradition but also reassures its dedication to evolving with the times and serving the community at every level.
