Metal fuels might sound like something out of a steampunk novel, but Voya Energy just got a serious vote of confidence to make them real. The company has raised $35.0M in a funding round backed by a heavyweight roster that includes Energy Impact Partners LP, John Doerr, Mantis VC, StepStone, Founders Fund, Overmatch Ventures, and Seven Stars.
Voya is chasing a bold premise: that recycled metals-not lithium, not hydrogen-can power a new class of carbon-free electricity generation, untethered from the grid. The pitch is that these fuels are abundant, energy-dense, and safe, and the company is building both the fuel itself and the devices to burn it. With that investor lineup, the bet is clearly being taken seriously, even if the path from lab to widespread deployment remains a long one.
