The grid can’t absorb all the electricity solar plants generate, and that wasted power is now the raw material for a startup’s seed round. Rune has raised $7.0M to build modular micro data centers that sit directly at solar sites, turning clipped and curtailed power into compute for AI workloads without touching the traditional grid.
The company’s pitch is straightforward: AI’s appetite for electricity is outpacing what new grid infrastructure can deliver, while solar operators routinely leave money on the table when inverters or grid operators cap their output. Rune’s hardware, software, and financial stack aims to bridge that gap, and its backers include Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures, and Lowercarbon Capital.
