Retro has raised $21.0M in a Series A round, a bet that social media can feel less like a compulsive scroll and more like a deliberate pause. The funding was led by Thrive Capital, with participation from Dylan Field, Scribble Ventures, Box Group, Imaginary Ventures, Coalition, Conviction, Copper, and Positive Sum.
The app is a friends-only photo journal, designed to nudge users toward posting at least one moment a week-not for an audience, but for the small circle of people who actually know them. The founders built it out of a simple frustration: the platforms that once kept friends in touch have pivoted to entertainment from strangers, leaving real-life updates buried in message threads or lost entirely. Early traction, per the company, is that privacy-conscious users feel safe enough to share things like kids' faces and flight itineraries-content they'd hesitate to post elsewhere.
