Maritime security startup Magnar has raised $8.0M in a Series A round, a bet that port facilities are ready to swap clunky ID checks for a subscription-based reader it claims is the first of its kind.
The company sells FortifID, a portable TWIC reader designed to speed up identity verification at U.S. maritime facilities-from cruise terminals to chemical docks-where federal security rules apply. The round was backed by 6 Degrees Capital, Hi Ventures, Fen Ventures, Platanus Ventures, Nascent Ventures, and Beccar Varela. Magnar’s pitch is that its hardware and software can be tailored to each site’s workflow, easing the tension between tight security and fast operations.
