Hertha Metals has raised $133.7M in Series A funding to scale its alternative to coke-based steelmaking. The round drew a long list of backers: Khosla Ventures, Doerr Capital, CEV, Pear Ventures, Gates Frontier, Niterra SUISO no MORI Fund, Toyota Ventures, Siemens Financial Services, and the U.S. Government.
The company is developing a proprietary pyrometallurgical process it says can run on flexible feedstocks, part of a push to make iron and steel production more efficient and less dependent on traditional coking. Hertha frames the work as strategically vital for U.S. industry as much as a climate play.
