Bioeconomy Science Institute Secures $10.4 Million Funding

The New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science Limited has secured $10,400,000 in investment capital from investors.

This funding round marks a significant step for the Institute, which officially formed on July 1, 2025, bringing together four established New Zealand Crown Research Institutes: AgResearch, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, Plant & Food Research, and Scion.

The Bioeconomy Science Institute operates with a team of over 2,000 people, including more than 1,500 scientists and researchers.

Its core mission is to support the growth and resilience of the bioeconomy in New Zealand and internationally.

The Institute develops new products, processes, and technologies that optimize the use of biological resources to deliver food and materials from resilient supply chains while protecting the natural environment.

As a Crown Research Institute, it is owned by the New Zealand Government and focuses on translating scientific discoveries into real-world outcomes and commercial success.

This capital infusion will enable the Institute to further its strategic objectives as it consolidates its operations and embarks on its mission.

The Bioeconomy Science Institute plans to use the funds to accelerate its scientific research programs, invest in key infrastructure, and enhance its commercialisation efforts.
