Space-based manufacturing is no longer just a concept for Besxar, which has raised $9.3M in seed funding to build out its orbital “Fabships.” The round was backed by Dauntless Ventures, Overture VC, 645 Ventures, Singh Capital Partners, Koru Capital, and Plum Alley Ventures.
The startup’s pitch is that the ultra-high vacuum of space can solve a problem Earth-bound chip fabs can’t touch: producing ultra-pure substrates and precursor materials for semiconductors used in AI, quantum computing, and defense. By manufacturing in orbit and returning to Earth after each mission, Besxar says it can achieve purity and yield levels that effectively double chip cost-effectiveness for these critical applications-while also gathering data to refine each subsequent run. The company frames this as a way to rebuild domestic semiconductor resilience, though it’s still early days for a sector that’s long on promise and short on proven orbital output.
