UMMC has acquired UGC for an undisclosed amount, marking a significant corporate transaction in the European entertainment sector. This acquisition sees UMMC take ownership of Le Groupe UGC, a prominent player with extensive operations spanning cinema exhibition, film production, and series development. UGC maintains a robust network of 50 cinemas and 521 screens across France, including the highly frequented UGC Ciné Cité Les Halles in Paris, alongside 7 cinemas and 74 screens in Belgium. The company recently expanded its cinema footprint with six new locations opened in 2021 and 2022, notably in Bordeaux, Lyon, and Paris.
Beyond its cinema network, UGC is a major force in content creation. The group produces and distributes a diverse slate of films, ranging from successful popular comedies to acclaimed auteur works. In recent years, UGC has also established a significant presence in television series production, operating five structures in France and one in the United Kingdom. It develops series for various broadcasters and streaming platforms, including "HPI" for TF1 and "Oussekine" for Disney+, positioning it as the fourth-largest producer of fiction by broadcast hours in France in 2022.
This acquisition is strategically aimed at consolidating and expanding UMMC’s presence within the dynamic European film and television industry. By integrating UGC’s substantial cinema infrastructure, established distribution channels, and prolific content production capabilities, UMMC gains a comprehensive platform. The synergy between UGC's exhibition prowess and its strong content pipeline is expected to create a vertically integrated entity, enhancing operational efficiencies and market reach.
The combined entity is poised to capitalize on UGC’s extensive audience engagement and production expertise. This move is anticipated to strengthen its competitive standing, broaden its entertainment offerings, and support continued growth and innovation across both cinema and episodic content creation in key European markets.
