GRT Jewellers (India) Private Limited has acquired TBZ - The Original, the jewelry retail brand operated by Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri Limited. The transaction was completed for an undisclosed amount, with the acquisition covering the brand’s retail operations and associated assets.
TBZ - The Original brings a legacy spanning 161 years, having started in 1864 at Zaveri Bazar, Mumbai. The brand operates 37 stores across 27 cities in 12 states, specializing in 100% BIS hallmarked gold jewelry and certified diamond designs. It is also credited with introducing the industry’s first buyback guarantee on jewelry purchases. GRT Jewellers, a prominent name in South Indian jewelry retail, adds this heritage network to its existing footprint.
The acquisition is driven by GRT Jewellers’ aim to expand its presence beyond its traditional southern markets. TBZ’s established brand recognition in western and northern India offers a ready-made platform for GRT to enter these regions without building a new customer base from scratch. For TBZ, the deal provides access to GRT’s operational scale and supply chain efficiencies, which could help streamline costs across its existing stores.
Both companies operate in the same segment-bridal and everyday jewelry-but with complementary geographic strengths. GRT’s strength lies in its modern retail processes and manufacturing capabilities, while TBZ contributes a deep-rooted heritage and a loyal customer following in its core markets. The combined entity is expected to leverage these strengths to improve inventory management and introduce standardized designs across a wider store network.
The integration will likely focus on retaining TBZ’s brand identity while adopting GRT’s backend systems. Customers of TBZ can expect continuity in product offerings, with potential enhancements in sourcing and pricing over time. The deal consolidates two mid-sized players in a fragmented market, positioning the combined business to compete more effectively against larger national chains.
