KONGSBERG

KONGSBERG has acquired Steerprop, a Finnish designer and manufacturer of propulsion systems for demanding marine applications, for an undisclosed amount. The transaction brings the specialist propulsion provider under the full ownership of the Norwegian technology group, which will integrate Steerprop’s operations into its existing marine systems portfolio.

Steerprop, founded in Finland in 2000, has built a reputation for purpose-built propulsion units that operate in the toughest conditions. Its products are installed on hundreds of vessels, including roughly one in three icebreakers currently in service worldwide. The company’s expertise lies in arctic-capable designs, developed through continuous engineering refinement and close collaboration with customers operating in extreme environments.

For KONGSBERG, the acquisition expands its offering in the maritime sector, particularly in ice-going and high-latitude vessels. The Norwegian firm already supplies automation, navigation, and control systems for ships, but lacked a dedicated in-house propulsion line for the most severe operational profiles. Adding Steerprop’s technology allows KONGSBERG to offer a more complete integrated package, from bridge systems to the physical thrusters that move the vessel.

The deal is expected to strengthen both companies’ positions in a niche but growing segment, as interest in polar shipping routes and ice-capable offshore vessels increases. Steerprop’s engineering team and its Finnish production base will remain intact, providing continuity for existing customers and long-term service agreements. KONGSBERG will also gain access to Steerprop’s established relationships with shipyards and fleet operators that specialise in icebreaking tonnage.

With the acquisition complete, the combined entity is positioned to deliver end-to-end solutions for vessels operating in the harshest waters. The immediate focus will be on aligning product roadmaps and ensuring that Steerprop’s existing orders proceed without disruption, while KONGSBERG explores how the propulsion technology can be adapted for its broader maritime customer base.
