ACTOM, a leading electrical engineering and power solutions company, has acquired SGB-SMIT Power Matla for an undisclosed amount.

This corporate acquisition sees ACTOM taking ownership of a significant transformer manufacturer, solidifying its position in the power infrastructure sector.

SGB-SMIT Power Matla, co-owned by SGB-Smit and Power Matla, a local black empowered company, specializes in the design, manufacturing, testing, installation, and commissioning of power and distribution transformers for the African continent, with operations in Pretoria West and Cape Town.

SGB-SMIT Power Matla brings over 70 years of experience, producing a full range of power and distribution transformers, including large power transformers up to 800 MVA 420 kV.

Its Pretoria West factory is noted as one of the biggest and most sophisticated transformer manufacturing plants in the Southern Hemisphere.

The company also manufactures transformer accessories like insulation and copper bars through SGB-Smit Calidus in Pretoria West, and offers extensive transformer services including a SANAS accredited laboratory for material testing.

This acquisition is a strategic move for ACTOM, aimed at expanding its product portfolio and strengthening its manufacturing capabilities within the critical power equipment market.

By integrating SGB-SMIT Power Matla’s expertise and extensive manufacturing footprint, ACTOM is set to enhance its offerings in high-voltage power solutions and address growing infrastructure demands across Africa.

The purchase underscores a commitment to localized production and enhanced service delivery in key electrical sectors.

The combined entity is expected to leverage significant operational synergies, including integrated supply chains, shared technical expertise, and an expanded customer base.

This union will likely lead to enhanced efficiency, broader market reach, and the ability to provide more comprehensive power solutions.

Looking forward, the acquisition positions ACTOM to become an even more dominant force in the provision of critical electrical infrastructure, driving growth and innovation in the African energy landscape.
