Watkins has acquired Sauer Brands, Inc. for an undisclosed amount, bringing together two heritage food companies with complementary portfolios. The transaction, finalized this week, places Sauer Brands’ lineup of Duke’s Mayo, Mateo’s Salsa, and Kernel Season’s under Watkins’ ownership, alongside its own line of spices, extracts, and health-focused pantry staples.
Sauer Brands, founded in 1887, has grown into a diversified flavor platform known for regional cult favorites and national condiment brands. Watkins, a century-old purveyor of spices and vanilla, has focused on natural and clean-label products. The acquisition broadens Watkins’ reach into the mayonnaise and salsa categories, which Sauer Brands has expanded rapidly in recent years, while giving Sauer’s brands access to Watkins’ established distribution channels in grocery and specialty retail.
The strategic rationale centers on category adjacency. Watkins brings strength in baking and seasoning aisles, while Sauer Brands commands higher shelf presence in condiments and snack seasonings. By combining procurement, manufacturing, and back-office operations, the merged entity expects to reduce costs and improve supply chain efficiency. Sauer Brands’ marketing expertise in building loyal consumer followings, particularly for Duke’s Mayo, can also be applied to Watkins’ core spice lines.
Both companies will retain their existing brand identities and production facilities, with Sauer Brands’ leadership team staying in place to manage day-to-day operations. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the deal is subject to customary regulatory approvals, which are expected to close in the coming quarter.
The combined company will operate with a broader pantry portfolio spanning spices, condiments, and seasonings, positioning it to compete more effectively against larger national players. With two family-founded businesses now under one roof, the focus shifts to integrating sales teams and expanding distribution without diluting the distinct character of either brand.
