Xenetic Biosciences, Inc. has acquired Santersus AG for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition brings Santersus’s innovative blood purification technology, centered on the NucleoCapture apheresis device, under the umbrella of Xenetic. Santersus AG has developed a unique strategy for the therapeutic treatment of patients through the selective extracorporeal removal of NETs (neutrophil extracellular traps) and cell-free DNA from blood.
Santersus’s patented NucleoCapture technology utilizes biocompatible, highly porous polymer beads conjugated with proprietary human recombinant histone H1.3 protein. This protein, a potent sensor and effector of the innate immune defense system, achieves over 95% removal of NETs and cfDNA in a single pass of contaminated blood. Crucially, this method allows for the safe removal of NETs without compromising the defensive function of neutrophils, offering a distinct advantage over potential pharmacological interventions.
This acquisition is a strategic move for Xenetic Biosciences, Inc., aiming to expand its therapeutic offerings and establish a presence in the critical care sector. The integration of Santersus’s technology is anticipated to disrupt current models of therapeutic apheresis in multiple areas. Santersus had previously reported phenomenal feedback from its diagnostic capability feasibility study, which was expected to lead to further development and market achievement.
The combined entity is now positioned to accelerate the development and commercialization of this novel blood purification system. By leveraging Santersus’s advanced technology, the unified company aims to deliver new therapeutic options for patients requiring selective removal of NETs and cell-free DNA, enhancing patient outcomes in critical care settings.
