CollPlant

CollPlant has acquired LightSolver, a developer of a laser-based processing unit for high-performance computing, for an undisclosed amount. The transaction transfers ownership of LightSolver’s technology and operations to CollPlant, which will integrate the computing platform into its broader research and development activities.

LightSolver has created the first pure laser-based processing unit, or LPU, a computing paradigm that relies on all-optical coupled lasers to perform calculations without electronic components. The system operates at room temperature, consumes low power, and fits in a desktop-sized chassis, while aiming to outperform traditional supercomputers and quantum systems on specific problem sets. CollPlant, a company focused on regenerative medicine and tissue repair, will apply LightSolver’s hardware to accelerate its computational modeling of biological processes, particularly in the design of collagen-based products.

The acquisition is strategic for CollPlant because it gains proprietary computing technology that can handle complex simulations faster than conventional servers. LightSolver’s LPU is built from commercially available laser components, which reduces supply chain risk and allows for scalable deployment. For LightSolver, joining CollPlant provides a parent company with a clear application for its hardware, moving the LPU from a standalone product into an integrated tool for life sciences research.

CollPlant expects to use the LPU to run simulations of molecular interactions and tissue scaffold designs that currently require extensive cloud computing time. The technology’s low power draw and small footprint also align with CollPlant’s operational needs, as the company can host the system on-site rather than relying on external data centers. No changes to LightSolver’s core team or product roadmap have been announced, and the company will continue to operate under its existing brand within CollPlant’s structure.

The combined entity will now pair LightSolver’s computing capability with CollPlant’s biomaterials expertise, potentially shortening development cycles for new regenerative therapies. The acquisition also gives CollPlant a differentiated asset that could be offered to other research partners in the future, though no such agreements have been disclosed. The immediate focus remains on integrating the LPU into CollPlant’s internal workflows and validating its performance on real-world biological problems.
