Softcat has acquired GDT - General Datatech for $1.1 billion, buying the global IT solutions provider outright in a cash-and-debt deal that brings the two companies under one ownership structure.
Softcat is a UK-based IT infrastructure and services provider. GDT is a global IT solutions provider that takes a people-first approach to solving problems and achieving outcomes, partnering with clients to identify key transformation triggers and realize high-impact opportunities that drive strategic change. Across 30 years, GDT has maintained over 450 certifications globally with technology providers including Cisco, HPE, NetApp, Juniper, and Fortinet. Its work spans cybersecurity, collaboration, enterprise networking, hybrid data center, lifecycle services, and technology procurement.
The purchase gives Softcat a larger international footprint and a broader technical bench. GDT's certifications and long-standing vendor relationships extend the combined company's ability to serve customers with complex infrastructure needs, while Softcat's existing base offers a channel through which GDT's services can reach new buyers. The two businesses operate in adjacent parts of the IT solutions market, which reduces overlap and gives the combined entity more ways to win work.
Cost savings are anticipated from consolidating back-office functions, vendor contracts, and procurement. The companies also expect to combine their technical teams to pursue larger, multi-vendor engagements that neither could easily deliver alone.
The combined company will operate as a single IT solutions business serving customers across multiple regions. Integration will determine how quickly the expected benefits materialize, and management has indicated that the priority is retaining GDT's technical staff and vendor certifications while folding its operations into Softcat's structure.
