SPAR Albania has acquired Eco-Market Sri Lanka for an undisclosed amount, bringing the Sri Lankan online marketplace for sustainable goods under the Albanian retail group’s ownership. The transaction, finalized this week, transfers full control of Eco-Market’s operations, brand, and vendor network to SPAR Albania, which operates a chain of supermarkets in the Balkan country.
Eco-Market Sri Lanka functions as a digital platform that connects consumers with eco-friendly businesses and products, ranging from organic food to household items. Its stated mission is to help shoppers make choices that are healthy for their families and the environment, offering a curated alternative to conventional retail. SPAR Albania, part of the global SPAR franchise, runs physical grocery stores and has been expanding its footprint in the region.
The acquisition gives SPAR Albania a direct entry into Sri Lanka’s niche e-commerce segment without building a new platform from scratch. For Eco-Market, the deal provides access to SPAR’s supply chain expertise and operational scale, which could help the platform broaden its product range and improve delivery logistics. SPAR Albania gains a tested digital model that aligns with growing consumer interest in sustainability, a category it has not previously served online.
The purchase is a cash transaction, though financial terms were not disclosed. No changes to Eco-Market’s day-to-day management were announced, and the platform will continue to operate under its existing name. SPAR Albania’s move reflects a pattern of regional grocers acquiring specialized online retailers to diversify beyond brick-and-mortar sales.
The combined entity will likely focus on integrating Eco-Market’s vendor relationships with SPAR’s procurement systems, while keeping the platform’s community-oriented identity intact. Whether SPAR Albania expands the model to other markets or deepens its Sri Lankan presence remains to be seen, but the deal positions the retailer to test cross-border e-commerce in a new geography.
