SOCAN has acquired the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency Ltd. (CMRRA), a SoundExchange company, for an undisclosed amount. The deal transfers ownership of CMRRA’s licensing operations and royalty administration business to SOCAN, which will now oversee the agency’s functions as part of its broader rights management portfolio.

CMRRA represents the vast majority of music publishers doing business in Canada, licensing dozens of digital services, including all major online music platforms operating in the country. The agency handles the licensing, collection, and distribution of royalties for most songs recorded, sold, and broadcast in Canada. SOCAN, a performing rights organization, manages public performance royalties for songwriters, composers, and publishers across Canada.

The acquisition consolidates two key players in Canadian music rights administration under one roof. For SOCAN, the move brings CMRRA’s extensive publisher relationships and digital service licensing agreements into its existing infrastructure, allowing the combined entity to offer a more unified approach to royalty collection. For CMRRA, joining SOCAN provides access to a larger operational framework and a broader base of rights holders, potentially streamlining administrative processes for publishers who previously dealt with separate agencies.

The transaction is expected to reduce duplication in royalty processing and create a single point of contact for digital services seeking Canadian music licenses. Publishers represented by CMRRA will continue to receive royalties through the same channels, though SOCAN will now manage the underlying agreements and collections. The deal does not affect CMRRA’s status as a SoundExchange company, but its day-to-day operations will be integrated into SOCAN’s systems over the coming months.

With this acquisition, SOCAN becomes the dominant force in Canadian music licensing, covering both performance and reproduction rights. The combined organization is positioned to simplify the licensing landscape for digital platforms and publishers alike, though the full impact on royalty flows and administrative efficiency will become clearer as integration proceeds.
