Grab has acquired Atome, the prominent Southeast Asian "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) brand, in a transaction valued at $1.5 billion. This corporate acquisition sees Grab integrating Atome's financial technology and merchant network into its broader ecosystem. Atome, part of Advance Intelligence Group, has established itself as a leading provider of flexible payment solutions, enabling consumers to split purchases into deferred payments.
Atome partners with over 15,000 online and offline retailers across various sectors, including fashion, beauty, and homeware, offering consumers greater financial access and payment flexibility. Beyond its core BNPL service, Atome Financial also provides a range of financial services, such as Cards and micro-lending, aimed at extending affordable credit access to unbanked and underbanked populations across ASEAN. The company has disbursed over $4 billion in loans since its inception.
The acquisition is a strategic move for Grab to deepen its presence in the digital financial services sector. By incorporating Atome's established BNPL capabilities and its broader financial offerings, Grab can enhance its suite of services for both consumers and merchants. This integration is anticipated to create synergies by expanding payment options for Grab users and providing Grab's merchant partners with access to Atome's flexible payment solutions, potentially driving increased engagement and transaction volumes across the combined platform.
The combined entity is poised to offer a more comprehensive digital financial experience across Southeast Asia. This development could accelerate financial inclusion by making a wider array of credit and payment solutions accessible to a larger consumer base, while also strengthening Grab's competitive position in the region's evolving digital economy.
