ÄIO Secures $1.4M Grant Funding for Sustainable Ingredients

ÄIO, an Estonian deep-tech startup, has secured $1,400,000 in funding to advance its mission of transforming fats and oils into sustainable, climate-positive ingredients.

This investment marks a significant milestone for the company, which specializes in developing innovative alternatives to traditional fats using biotechnology.

The capital infusion will support ÄIO’s ongoing efforts to scale its proprietary technology and expand its market reach in the sustainable ingredient sector.

The company employs a proprietary precision fermentation platform that utilizes robust yeast strains to upcycle wood and food industry side-streams.

This process converts industrial residues and local biomass into functional microbial oils.

By leveraging this circular approach, ÄIO offers sustainable alternatives to conventional palm, coconut, and animal fats, significantly reducing dependence on arable land, seasonal crops, and agriculture linked to deforestation.

Founded in 2022 as a spin-off from TalTech, ÄIO has demonstrated rapid progress, scaling its operations from initial lab experiments to 10,000 L pilot production in 2024, with plans for 100,000 L production capacity in 2025.

The newly raised funds are planned to be used to accelerate these growth initiatives, further scale its production capabilities, and continue the development of its diverse product portfolio.

This includes ingredients like Encapsulated Oil, RedOil, and ZymaLipid Complex.

These innovative ingredients are designed for broad applications across various industries, including food, feed, cosmetics, and green chemistry. Co-founded by Dr. Nemailla Bonturi and Prof.
